Word Wall Words: me, yes, will
Phonics: The children seem to be struggling a bit with the short /e/ sound. We are going to continue another week with this sound. Ask your child if they can sing the short /e/ song for you. They really enjoyed singing it with me.
Science: We are going to begin a very exciting unit. The Solar System! The children always love exploring the planets and learning all the cool characteristics of each one.
Religion: We are continuing with our daily Lenten prayer service. The children each drew a picture of what he/she believe Heaven looks like and wrote about it. All the drawings and writing gave me chills. They did an amazing job!
Have a happy week ![]()
Miss Mayor
Spanish: book due Friday, March 12
Religion: This week we begin our study of the sacraments. Chapter 16 focuses on the Sacraments of Initiation; Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. We will take the chapter test on Friday, March 12. Also, this Friday is our third grade mass at 8:15. Please look for your Invitation to Worship in the Wednesday envelope.
English/Writing: This week we will review Unit 5; Capitalization and Punctuation. We will take the unit test on Thursday, March 11. In writing we continue on with our poetry unit.
Science: This is one of our more exciting weeks in Science class! All crews have been assigned their planet and are working on their planet webquest. They have designed a crew patch and are beginning to collect data to send to Mission Control (me) about their discoveries. On Monday we will make our three dimensional planets ( using balloons, kleenex, liquid starch, and water) and on Thursday we will paint them. Please send your child to school with a big old paint shirt and a plastic bag to put it in. They will bring it home on Thursday. Also, everyone will be creating a virtual postcard to email home about their amazing exploration. Your child will bring home an index card. Please write down the email address that you would like your child to send the virtual post card to. We are aiming for a launch of the post cards during the week of March 15-19.
Math: We begin Chapter 13 in which we will study the customary units of measure such as inches, feet, yards, and miles. We will do some measuring and also converting units of measure. Our problem solving strategy in this chapter will be using logical reasoning. From there we will measure capacity in customary units; cups, pints, quarts, and gallons, and weight in pounds and ounces. Look for opportunities around the house for measuring whether cooking in the kitchen or measuring while sewing….the more we use our customary units of measure the easier it is for us to understand them.
Reading: With a five day week we can begin to get back on our regular schedule. All groups will have story quizzes and Spelling tests on Friday as usual. Stories for the week are: Illustrators The Many Lives of Benjamin Franklin, Authors The Lost Lake, and Publishers Sarah, Plain and Tall. The Illustrators will work on an extended writing assignment about Benjamin Franklin, the Authors will review comprehension and study skills as we begin our new book, and the Publishers will begin their internet research for the decades project. I will remind all of the Publishers to bring the interview information they have gathered to school on Monday, March 8.
Music: Remember to bring recorders to school on Tuesday.
Continue to encourage accelerated reading. Everyone has done a fine job of pacing themselves so far this quarter.
A great, big thank you to Mr. White for his always fascinating Science demonstration last week. The children loved it and as usual Mr. White sparked everyone’s curiosity about all things scientific!
If you are able to a donation of paper towels or kleenex for the classroom would be appreciated.
All in all that should cover it. Hope you have a great week!

Week of March 1st update for 7B
Closed Published by Mrs. Anderson (7B) March 2nd, 2010 in Announcements.Mrs. Anderson’s update for the week of March 1st
This week is the start of the 3rd Trimester! Remember we do not have school on Monday or Friday this week.
In Science This Week:
All grade levels should continue to keep up will assigned reading and section review questions. I do give points for completing the section review questions. Please remember vocabulary definitions should be kept in your science notebook and will be collected and checked for points the day we take the chapter test. Finally book notes for extra credit can be turned in the day of the chapter test for 2pts per section (Up to 16pts per trimester for 7th and 8th grades. 6th grade does not have a limit on extra credit points.) Please check with me if you are unsure about how many extra credit points you have for the trimester.
6th grade
We will be beginning work in the Weather and Climate book this week.
7th grade
We will be beginning work in the Human Biology and Health book this week.
8th grade
We will be beginning work in the Sound and Light book this week.
This week in the Gospel Jesus takes Peter, John and James to the mountain top. There, Jesus’ appearance changes and He begins to speak to Moses and Elijah. Then, God the Father speaks to tell Jesus’ companions, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” Do we listen to what Jesus has to say?
In Religion, we are continuing our daily Lenten Prayer Service. We are also talking about the Stations of the Cross.
In math, we are continuing our unit on money and time. We will emphasize more about time this week. We have begun to learn the song “The Hands on the Clock”. At home, you may wish to continue emphasizing money. Have the children identify the coins in their piggy banks. Have them sort the coins. Have the children pick the coins up to feel them. They can feel the edges of the coins. The children should tell you the name of the coin and how much it is worth. The chants we have used are:
Penny, penny
Easy spent,
Copper brown
And worth one cent.
Nickel, nickel
Thick and fat.
You’re worth five.
I know that!
Dime, dime
Little and thin,
Shiny silver
You’re worth ten.
Quarter, quarter
Big and bold,
You’re worth twenty-five
I’m told!
Our high frequency words this week are this, would, and my.
In computers, we have been emphasizing practicing our skills in both math and language arts. This always follows a few minutes of keyboard practice. At home, you can allow your child to practice typing in any word program you may have. They love to see what they have typed. They also love to read it to you!
Remember we have school only Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.
We have many half pairs of mittens and gloves down in Kindergarten. These don’t have the owner’s name. Are you missing any?
There is an Open House on Tuesday evening, March 2, for anyone wanting to come and see our Preschool and Kindergarten. Please call the office to let them know you are interested, so we can plan for your coming. The number is 630-969-1732. If you know of someone who may be interested in attending Saint Joan of Arc this coming school year, this would be a good time to have them come and see the school. We can answer many of the questions they may have about the school. We would love to see you there. Sister Carolyn will begin our evening. Each of the teachers will present something on sections of our curriculum. You will have an opportunity to view more of our curriculum and activities down in the classrooms.
Enjoy the week!
Jr. High begins a new trimester this week and we will concentrate on basketball skills and drills. The kids will be tested on lay-ups, mikens, 3-person weave and free throws at the end of this unit.
DANCE CLASS: The 7th and 8th graders have two professional dance classes left with Mr. Fuzak. The last class will be Monday, March 15 and parents are invited to come and see their children dance. 7th grade dances from 11:20 – 12:30, and 8th grade dances from 12:40 – 2:00.
Jr. High fitness classes on Thursday — BE READY TO RUN. We will set up calisthenics stations during between running sets.
6th grade health class will study nutrition and the food guide pyramid with Mrs. Wenzel.
4th and 5th graders are also beginning basketball this week. 3rd grade is being assessed on locomotor skills required by the diocese. 1st and 2nd graders will work on ball skills. Kindergarten does not have gym this week.
Have a wonderful week!
Since we have a short week there will not be a Spelling test this week. We will go through the lesson in the book. There will be a Social Studies handout going home today to fill in. We will read the information needed to answer the questions. I will encourage the students to either go on the website or to bring home their books. Don’t forget there is no school on Friday.
In Religion we continue our daily Lenten Prayer service. I feel that the children sense this is a more serious time of year than how we celebrated the season of Advent.
This is a very short week, but we continue to forge on with our high frequency words: “this”, “my”, and “would”.
We will be finishing up our afternoon Pegasus story of Bringing The Rain To Kipiti Plain. I’m sure you were all amazed at how well the children are doing with reading it! They learned so much during this unit.
