It is hard to believe we are at the end of February and already into Lent!!!  We have been very busy here in 1A!
Religion
Last week in religion we spent a lot of time talking about Lent and the CHOICES we make everyday.  A big thank you to all the moms who came and helped us make sacrifice beads.  I hope you have seen your  child’s beads and you are encouraging him/her to keep track of all the choices that bring us closer to God.  This week we will continue on in our religion book to talk about serving others.  We will discuss how Jesus asks all of his followers to serve others with a pleasant attitude!

Social Studies-1B
We will be learning about oceans, continents and land forms this week.  We will also be taking some time to think about what natural resources are and how people use them in their daily lives.
Writing
I apologize for any confusion regarding the photograph we asked you to send in.  If you haven’t sent a picture yet please do so as soon as possible.  We will be writing the story here at school.  There is NO need for your child to write anything at home–just discuss the event to help him/her remember some of the important details.  We will begin brainstorming and writing this week.
Math
Orange and Blue both completed the Unit 3 test last week.  Both groups are now working on place value.  We have been learning about place value a little each day during our calendar time so I expect this unit to move at a quick pace.  Please work with your child on recognizing coins and what each is worth.  We are really beginning to practice counting money at school.  I expect that by the time we get to the time and money chapters in our textbook it will be a simple review for our students.  Please continue to practice math facts to 12 at home also.  Thank you for your extra work at home!

Reading
Cheetahs and Dolphins will be reading The Knee High Man this week.  This story is a play and many children have never read a play before.  We will spend a lot of time talking about the format of a play.  We will be working on reading charts this week and making inferences as well.   This week our spelling words focus on the long U sound.  The words for the week are: rule, tube, cute, tune, mule, flute.  The bonus word for the week is: sacrifice.  The sentence for the week is: She played a nice tune on the flute.

The Penguins will be reading  Put out the Fire this week.  They will be reviewing inferences and cause and effect.  We will also be reviewing the high frequency words and phonics skills that we have covered in the past 4 weeks.  The penguins words for this week are: truck, pole, smoke, ring, bell, brave, always, and clean.  The bonus word for the week is: sacrifice.  The sentence for the week is: Go down the pole to the fire truck.  The penguins will take their unit test at the end of this week of Monday of the following week.
Have a great week!
