Religion: We begin our week with Reconciliation on Monday morning. On Tuesday we will begin Chapter 15;The Church Guides with the story of Saul (St. Paul) and Jesus. We will learn about grace, forming our conscience, and the precepts of the Church. We will take the chapter test on Friday, February 26.
English: We continue on in Unit 5 with introductory words, commas in a series, and combining sentences to make a series. In Writing most of us have finished What Makes Me Smile . This week we will begin a unit on poetry. Over the course of the next few weeks will work with some forms of poetry such as cinquain, acrostic, concrete, alphabet, catalog, couplets, triplets, and alliteration. We should have some fun with this!
Science: We begin the week with our Moon Phases quiz. We made a Moon Phases wheel to help us learn our phases. We also viewed a video about the Moon, simulated the phases of the Moon in our classroom, and played an interactive game on our SMART board during which the children had to find the right phase of the Moon and move it to its correct spot. On Tuesday we begin our study of the Solar System. We will learn what our solar system is, what it takes to be considered a planet, and of course take a look at our favorite star, the Sun.
Math: We move onto Chapter 12 this week; Time and Temperature. We will begin by reading time on the clock to the nearest hour, half hour, and quarter hour. From there we will tell time to five minutes and to the minute. We will make clocks in class to help us out and use some fun SMART board activities to help us get it right.Elapsed time will be our focus near the end of the week and that is our biggest challenge. Looking at an analog clock and trying to figure out how much time has passed. If you have an analog clock at home try to take a look at it with your child to see what they already know. This is a short chapter and so we are on track to test out of it on Thursday, March 4.
Reading: All groups will have spelling tests and story quizzes on Friday, February 26. The Illustrators will read LonPoPo ( a version of Little Red Riding Hood), and the Authors will read Wilbur’s Boast (an excerpt from Charlotte’s Web). The Publishers begin a new book and a new unit. The story for this week is The Lost Lake. We will begin to do some things differently in this new book. We will still write weekly vocabulary stories however there will be another weekly vocabulary activity to accompany it; the activity will change weekly. The writing focus in this unit is narrative and so each week the children will be writing a short narrative piece connected to our story topic or theme. They will still continue to work in their practice books. In this new book we will also work on a unit project for each unit ( which is every five stories). This unit is called Reflections in which stories will inspire us to reflect on things that have happened in our lives. For this unit I will be dividing the group in to four smaller groups and assigning each group a decade to research. Most of the research will be done in school with the exception of interviewing family members about their decade. Their interview questions will come home this week and they will have two weeks to interview parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles….in person or by phone to find out what they remember most about the decade. We will focus on news, weather, sports, and entertainment as well as family events. Once all of their research is done in and out of the classroom each group will create a newspaper about their decade and present them in class. It will be interesting to see which events the children decide to focus on in their news reports!
Music: Remind your child to bring their recorder to school!
Mid term progress reports will come home this week in the Wednesday envelope.
All in all that should cover it! Have a great week!
