3A Week of February 8 Ms. Brown

Religion: This week we will work in Chapter 14; Share Your Light. We will discuss how we can be a light to others. We will learn about the virtues of faith, hope, and love and how they help guide us in our lives. We will take the chapter test on Thursday.
English/Writing: We continue on in Unit 5;this week writing different types of sentences (statements, questions, commands, exclamations), combining sentences, and capitalizing proper nouns. In writing we will continue to write about “Jazzy January” and move on to a short narrative piece “What Makes Me Smile”
Science: We have finished up Chapter 7; Changes in Weather. The children will finish up the last lesson outline and vocabulary packet this week and take the chapter test on Thursday. We have begun the Chapter 8 content; why we have day and night and the seasons. This will be a fun chapter for everyone. First we will learn about the Sun, then the Moon and its phases. From there we begin to learn about the planets. For this part of Chapter 8 the children will work in groups of 3-4 on our lap tops and do a planet webquest. They will be a pretend crew on a mission to their planet. They will learn all about the planet, create a crew patch, a three dimensional planet, a virtual planet post card and a report. They will present their planet to the class near the end of the third quarter. It will be a lot of fun to explore the planets and see the children work cooperatively in groups!
Math: We continue on in Chapter 11; this week dividing by 3,4, and 6 and we will continue with problem solving strategies. We will do one fifty fast facts this week and another extended response story problem. We are on track to take the Chapter 11 test on Friday, February 19.
Reading: This is a review week for the Publishers. They will read Koala Catchers and take a unit test on Thursday. The Authors will read Two Bad Ants, and the Illustrators will read Big Blue Whale. This is a short week so spelling tests and story quizzes will be on Thursday.
Children who participated in the Monarch reading program will be recognized this week on Monday morning.
For music remind your child to bring their recorder to school on Tuesday.
Since Valentine’s Day is on Sunday next weekend we will distribute Valentine Cards on Thursday of this week. We will pass them out at lunch time. I told the children not to address the cards on the outside of the envelope as it makes it easier to just put one valentine in each students’ bag. We have 31 students in 3A.
