Welcome to Catholic Schools Week!  It was great to see so many of you at the open house on Sunday afternoon!  If you were at the 11:30 mass you probably heard Father Gabriel talking about visiting the kindergarten that sang a song for him—that was actually 1A!  We were very excited to have Sister Carolyn and Father Gabriel stop by to visit and hear us sing about God!

We are in for an exciting week here at SJA!  Monday will start out with and ice cream treat provided by the PSO!  We will also have a chance to go to the book fair on Monday afternoon.  Tuesday is Groundhog day.  We will have several fun things to do!  We will attend a performing arts assembly in the afternoon!  February 3 is the commemoration of Saint Blaze.  On Wednesday, we will attend a prayer service and have our throats blessed.  Friday is Spirit Day.  Children are encouraged to wear school colors, red and white!  We will have a fun spirit rally in the afternoon to finish out our fun week!

Here’s what is going on in our class:
Math
Orange group will begin working on fractions and probability.  Blue group will be finishing up patterning and taking the unit quiz.  They will get started on fractions and probability toward the end of the week.

Reading
We will be taking a break from our reading series this week.  We are going to be learning about how to read non-fiction books.  The children will practice using conventions of non-fiction such as the table of contents and glossary.  We will also learn about captions and diagrams.  The children will work with partners to read about a topic of their choice.  They will also work on writing a report about what they’ve read.  I know the children are going to gain a lot of useful knowledge about nonfiction text.
There will be NO SPELLING this week!  We will be practicing word families in class and reviewing spelling patterns we already know!
We will also spend a good amount of time focusing on sentences.  What is a sentence?  What do sentences end with?  How do you know a question from a statement?

Religion
We will continue to discuss the saints and how they show God’s love.  We will be finishing up the unit this week.  Look for a study guide to come home toward the end of the week.  We will have a unit test next week.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
