Mrs. Barenbrugge-January 25

I can’t believe we are already nearing the end of January!  Things have been very busy here in 1A!  This week we will be getting our classroom ready for your visit.  I hope to see everyone next Sunday at 11:30 mass and then at our SJA open house immediately following mass.  Make sure you mark your calendars!

In religion this week we will continue our discussion about the Holy Spirit.  We will be doing a fun partner activity where we will “guide” each other.  We will also be thinking about how the Holy Spirit guides the Catholic Church.

In Social Studies the children will be learning about the cardinal directions.  After we discuss cardinal directions we will learn about the compass rose and how that is helpful when looking at a map.  Last week we enjoyed exploring google maps during class.  I encourage you to help your children locate your home on google maps (be sure to change it to satellite view)!

During writing time we will be thinking of all the bright ideas we have to write about.  This will build a bank of story starters for the children to use when they are writing.

In math both groups will continue working on spatial relations.  We will focus on slides, flips and turns this week.  We will also be practicing recognizing, continuing and translating patterns.  The orange group will be taking the unit quiz on Friday.  The blue group will take the quiz next week.   We have been working on both time and money during our calendar time each morning.  The children are REALLY good at telling time to the hour and the half hour.  This week I will introduce the concept of quarter after and quarter till.  We are going to be focusing more on money during calendar time.  You can help at home by working with your first grader to recognize the various coins and know how much each is worth.  The more familiar with money your children are before we get to that unit the better off they are!  Thank you for your help!

In reading we are going to work on our writing.  Many children are still struggling with writing complete sentences when they are given a prompt.  We will focus on TTQA this week.  TTQA stands for Turn That Question Around.  It will help guide the children to write more complete ideas.  Ask your first grader about TTQA!

The cheetahs and dolphins will be taking the Unit 3 test this week and then begin on The Shopping List.  They will be focusing on the long i/mama e rule this week.  We will also be talking about cause and effect.  Starting this week backward letters will be counted incorrect on your child’s spelling test.  Please be sure to reinforce this at home when you are practicing!  The spelling words for this week  are: smile, while, white, bite, wide, and hide.  The bonus word for this week is after.  The sentence for this week is: Did you hide the blue toy?

The Penguins will be reading The Knee High Man. We will be focusing on the long u sound.  The children will practice making inferences as well as reading charts.  The spelling words for this week are: rule, tube, cute, tune, mule, flute, been and clean.  The sentence for this week is: She played a nice tune on the flute.  The bonus word for this week is clean.

We will also be working on some other surprises for Open house!  I look forward to seeing you then!
