Published by Ms. Brown (3A) January 23rd, 2010 in Announcements.Spanish: pages 17,18,21 due Friday, January 29
Religion: This week we will focus on Chapter 13. We will learn the Beatitudes and the importance of being a forgiving, loving, peaceful person. We will take the chapter test on Friday, January 29.
English: We will finish up Unit 4 with a lesson on the homophones to, two, and too. We will work on the chapter review in school and take the Unit 4 test on Friday, January 29. Most students have completed their Winter Break stories and many are already done with their book reports. Everyone will finish their book report in school this week by Wednesday, January 27. Book projects should come to school on Thursday, January 28. It sounds like we have a nice variety of projects coming to school this week. It has also been fun to read the children’s book reports. Many have chosen novels from classic children’s literature. Good Job!!
Science: Our weather vocabulary and outline packet is due Wednesday, January 27. Last week we learned some new weather vocabulary and learned about instruments that measure the weather, how weather predicitons are made, and why they are not always correct! We learned all of this with the help of our SMART board. This week we focus on the Water Cycle, condensaton, evaporation, types of clouds, types of severe weather, and how to stay safe in severe weather. We will take a look at a “cloud in a jar”, and everyone will make stratus, cirrus, and cumulus clouds in school this week. Busy, busy!!
Math: Last week we took a look at the concept of division and how multiplication and division are related. This week we will learn to divide by 2, 5, and 10 and work on some new problem solving strategies. In an attempt to work our way toward being proficient in our multiplication facts twice a week we will do 50 fast facts in class. You will see them coming home in the Wednesday envelope. The children listen to one multiplication fact every 5 seconds and just right down the answer. To my amazement many children had 40-50 correct on the first try!! Keep practicing those facts. It will make learning about fractions and long division so much easier during the fourth quarter.
Reading: All groups will have Spelling tests and story quizzes this week as usual. The Illustrators will read In My Family. The Authors will read Pure Power. This is a review week for the Authors and so they will have a unit test on Friday. Last week they presented their Benjamin Franklin brochures and did a great job. They are also working on completing a comic strip drawing of their favorite scene from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. They will share their comic strips this week. The Publishers will read Do Animals Think?- a story based on scientific arguments about if animals think and if they do how can we tell. The Publishers did a fine job with their sequels to The Bat Boy and His Violin. We are sharing a few a day. Currently they are working on a dialogue piece of writing between the two bad ants in last week’s story.
Catholic Schools Week: CSW will begin next week on Sunday, January 31 with our open house after the 11:30 A.M. Mass. I hope to see you there!
As you can see our third quarter in third grade is a very busy (but exciting!) one. The children are up to the challenge as we have passed our halfway mark!
Thank you to those of you who have donated kleenex and paper towels recently. We appreciate your help! We seem to go through those paper towels with lunch time spills pretty quickly.
Have a great week!
