1B Week of Jan. 19

This week we will be getting ready for your visit to our classroom during Catholic Schools Week. On Tuesday, we will see a Mad Scientist!! We will have Arts Alive on Wednesday and on Friday we will have a special Benediction Service in Church to Celebrate Life. We will also be discussing the Character Trait of Honesty. Ask us what it means to be HONEST.
Religion
This week we will see how many of the heroes of our Faith followed God by saying “yes” to his call such as, Noah, Mary, Daniel, Mother Terese, and other Saints. We will see that Baptism makes you a member of God’s Kingdom and a member of the Church. We will be praying for the people of Haiti and for other personal intentions. Our
Scripture Reading this week is Luke 14: 16-23.

Read: Reread all the stories from Unit 5, Part 1. Your child may keep the book all week to read all the unit stories. Please return the book by Friday, January 22. Please encourage your child to read fluently, paying attention to punctuation, and using expression.

The following are the aspects of Language Arts that your child will be tested on:
Review Long e as ee, e, ie, ea; Long o as oa, oe, ow, Long i as i, y, igh.
Review: Words with ing endings
Study Skills – Dictionary skills, find a word, read the meaning
Writing – Can write about an animal that lives in the woods. Includes where the animal lives and what it eats.
Math
Saints
We are beginning Unit 5, Time and Money. We will begin with the concept of time. We will differentiate minute and hour. We will give sequence to time before, now, later, after. We will determine the amount of elapsed time that has taken place. Your child will demonstrate their knowledge of analogue and digital clocks by reading clocks first at the hour and half hour and eventually to the minute.

Practice Math Facts through 12 for the Third Quarter.
Angels
We are working on grouping numbers by ten to determine quantities of item up to 100.
We are looking for patterns on the 100’s chart. We will write the words ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety and one hundred. We are learning place value for tens and ones.

Science for 1A
This week 1A will begin Science in Room 1 B. We will learn about a famous Scientist in history, Thomas Edison. Then, we will discover the kinds of things Scientists do and how they conduct experiments. We will do an experiment and record our results by way of the Scientific Method, i.e., observe, ask a question, make a prediction, make a plan, follow the plan, record the results, try the plan again, draw a conclusion.
