Mrs. Barenbrugge-January 19

I hope everyone enjoyed their extra day off this week!  Hopefully, your first grader told you all about Martin Luther King, Jr. and why we honor him!

This week 1A will begin going to Mrs. McMahon for science four afternoons a week.  Please check her blog to find out what they will be learning about!  The 1A students will now have science until the end of the school year!  We will be going to a Mad Science assembly on Tuesday afternoon, what a perfect way to get the children excited about science class!

Religion

In religion we will be learning about the Holy Spirit this week.  We will explore how the Holy Spirit is a guide for us and the Catholic Church.  On Friday we will be going to church to Celebrate Life with a prayer service in the afternoon.

Social Studies

Welcome 1B parents who are reading to find out about Social Studies.  Your children will be focusing on Unit One: People Everywhere for the next few weeks.  We will be talking about families, school, rules and leaders.  I am looking forward to spending time getting to know the children I don’t already work with.

Math

Both math groups are continuing to work on spatial sense and patterns.  We will be talking about sliding, flipping and turning objects.  We will also be working with patterns.  The children will be predicting patterns, continuing patterns and translating patterns.  As I said last week, I don’t expect the children to have a difficult time with this unit.  We will work through it at a quick, steady pace.  Please remember to focus flash cards on sums to 12.  The facts are getting harder each quarter so spending a few minutes each night will really help your student!

Reading

This week the dolphins and the cheetahs will be reading the last story of Unit 3, Let’s Camp Out,  this week.  The children will be taking the unit test toward the end of the week.  The children have learned many new and difficult things during this past unit!  The children will be assessed on their knowledge and understanding of story elements, comparing and contrasting, contractions, possessives and reading diagrams.  They will also have a regular spelling test this week.  The words for the week are: sticks, mud, sun, snow, fire, and twigs.  The sentence this week is: The sticks and twigs are on fire.  The vocabulary words we will review this week are: eat, us, try, just, old, blue, under, and red.

The penguins will be reading Jasmin’s Ducks this week.  This week we will be focusing on cause and effect and the ending ed.  The children will also be working on the long o (silent e) spelling pattern.  Starting this week the children will be getting 8 words each week.  6 of the words will fit the pattern we are studying and two of them will be high frequency words.  Starting this week if children write ANY letter backward on their spelling tests it will be counted wrong.  The spelling words for this week are: home, rope, hope, those, hole, nose, work and buy.  The bonus word is because.  The sentence for the week is: I hope the rope will hold.

Have a great week!
