3A Week of January 18 Ms. Brown

Spanish: pages 17,18,and 21 due Friday, January 29

Religion: This week we review Unit 4 and focus on the themes of Catholic Social Teaching. We begin by reading about and discussing The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers. We will take a look at the other principles of Catholic Social teaching also and work on a related poster project in school. No test this week.

English/Writing: We continue on in Unit 4 and practice writing with adverbs. We will complete Winter Break stories this week and begin our book reports/reviews. Most of the children said they have selected their book for their report and book project. All students must have their book selected by the end of this week. Book reports in class will be due on Wednesday, January 27 and book projects are due on Thursday, January 28.

Science:  3A students return to Science for the third quarter. We will focus on the concepts in Unit D in our Science book; Weather and Space. The children will work on many projects in class during the third quarter including webquests. We begin the first part of the quarter by taking a look at weather, the water cycle, and climate and seasons. The second part of the quarter will be devoted to planets, moons, and stars.

Math: We begin Chapter 10 Divsion Concepts this week. We will start the week off by exploring ways to think about division such as dividing numbers into equal groups, repeated subtraction on the number line, and relating multiplication and division. In this chapter we will learn to divide by 2,5, and 10. Continue to practice multiplication flash cards at home.

Reading: Spelling tests for all groups on Friday as usual. Stories for this week are: the Publishers Two Bad Ants ( a fun story told from the point of view of ants!), the Authors Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,( a fun story about a place where the food falls from the sky) and the Illustrators The Terrible Eek ( a funny story about a misunderstanding). How nice that all groups will be reading stories written to entertain this week. We will write vocabulary stories and work in our practice books. All groups will have story quizzes this week. The Publishers will finish the final copy of their sequel to The Bat Boy and His Violin and share them in class throughout the week. The Authors will continue working on their Benjamin Franklin brochures and present them on Friday.

Music: Mr. Watson sent an information sheet home about recorders. Some children have brought their own to school and others are ordering them through Mr. Watson for $3. Everybody is excited about learning to play the recorder!

Handwriting: We are slowly beginning to write some assignments in cursive. Most of us will make the complete change to cursive during the week of February 1.

Accelerated Reader: Requirements remain the same for the third quarter.

Tuesday: Mad Science Assembly

Wednesday: Report cards come home in the Wednesday envelope

Friday: Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction.

All in all that should cover it. The beginning of a very busy third quarer! Have a great week!
