Welcome to another week in 1A!  We jumped right back into the swing of things and have been very busy!  Thank you to all the science parents last week-they did a great job teaching the first graders about simple machines!  Here is what we’ll be learning about this week!

Religion

The children will take the Unit 3 test and then we will begin the next chapter in our book.  We will focus on saying “Yes” to God.  We have spent some time discussing this already when we learned about the saints.

Social Studies

This week we will learn about different symbols that we have in America including: the American flag, the Statue of Liberty, and the Eagle. We will also discuss American heroes with a special focus on Martin Luther King, Jr.

Writing

This week we will finish up our How to writing paper and begin a fun project for you to see during the open house at the end of the month.

Math

Orange group will be finishing up geometric shapes and begin a unit on spatial sense and patterns.  We will discuss key terms such as over, under, left and right.  We will also work with grids and how to place things and find things on a grid.  I don’t imagine the children will have any difficulties with this unit and we will move quickly through it.

The blue group is also continuing through the geometry unit.  Please reinforce with your child the difference between a plane shape (circle, square, and triangle) and a solid shape (sphere, cube, rectangular prism).  This is sometimes a difficult concept for the children to grasp.  As we finish up our geometry unit we will move into the spatial sense and patterns unit.

Keep practicing math facts.  The end of the quarter is almost upon us and the facts will be more challenging next quarter!  Also, please remember to have your child do one page on homework each night.  I plan the homework to reinforce what we worked on in class each day.

Reading

The penguins will be reading The Shopping List this week.  We will be focusing on the long I sound and cause and effect.  The spelling words for the week are: smile, while, white, bite, wide, and hide.  The bonus word is January.  The sentence for the week is: Did you hide the blue toy?  The sight words for the week are: after, blue, were, who, always, from, right and out.

The dolphins and the cheetahs will be reading Snakes the week.  We will be learning about the long a sound.  Be sure to ask your child who Mama E is.  We will also be focusing on comparing and contrasting and contractions this week.  The spelling words for this week are: came, made, shade, lake, name, and snake.  The bonus word for the week is January.  The sentence for the week is: A snake came to the lake.  The high frequency words we will be learning this week are: know, under, where, why, long, ask, an and ever.

Have a great week!
