Mrs. Barenbrugge 1A December 7
Published by Mrs. Barenbrugge 1A December 7th, 2009 in Announcements.Welcome to another busy week here in 1A! This week we will have a few practices for our Christmas show. The children are sounding fantastic-let’s all hope for no snow this year! We are working hard on a special gift just for our parents, I can’t give you any more information—it’s top secret! Be sure to look for it under the tree on Christmas morning!
Don’t forget Tuesday is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. We will be attending all school mass at 10:00. All are welcome to attend!
In religion we are continuing our discussion about advent. Each day we move Mary and Joseph closer to Bethlehem on our Advent calendar. Has your first grader been taking the rings off his/her chain and completing the activity? St. Nicholas stopped by this weekend and left a little gift for us! We will also be talking about the Great Commandment this week during our religion time.
In social studies we are going to spend a little more time thinking about community workers and goods and services this week. The children are going to learn a special song about community workers. Ask them to sing it for you.
In math class we got a little behind last week. The children had a more difficulty than I anticipated with fact families. I think we have a good grip on it now. This week both groups will be finishing up Unit 2 and moving on to Unit 3-geometry and fractions. I am not sure how far we will get in this unit because of all the extra things that are going on during the next two weeks! Please keep practicing math facts and remember that homework is due on Monday morning.
In reading we are studying a new author, Jan Brett. She writes some really wonderful stories and often using pictures to foreshadow the next event in her story. Check out some of her books the next time you are at the library! Also, during conferences many of you expressed concern over the AR books your child is checking out from the library. Starting in January we will implement a new system throughout all of first grade to ensure the children are choosing appropriate leveled books. Look for more details after the holiday break! There will be no spelling words next week!
Penguins are reading Snakes. We will be learning about silent e this week! The spelling words for this week are: came, lake, made, name, shade, and snake. The sentence for this week is: A snake came to the lake. The bonus word this week is Christmas. The high frequency words are know, under, where, why, long, ask, an and ever.
Dolphins and Cheetahs are reading Greg’s Mask. We will be working on beginning blends this week. The spelling words are: clap, class, dress, drop, track, and trip.
