3B Happenings 11/2 - 11-6

Daylight Savings time ends. Set your clock to fall back one hour.

It will be so much fun to hear the Halloween stories from the children tomorrow. Thank you to Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Hasse for the enjoyable lunchtime fun last Friday. The All Saints Day Event was very sweet. The children who had siblings in the parade of saints were so proud of them. We all enjoyed learning new facts about favorite saints.

This week (Wednesday) we will have a visitor from Junior Achievement. Mr. Braun wil do a weekly lesson on community development over the next 6 weeks. It should be great fun and very hands on learning for the students.

Next week, we will be collecting items to send to military personnel overseas through Operation Support Our Troops Illinois. The third grade is collecting granola bars (individually wrapped) and toilet paper. See past blogs for suggestions of other products needed by the troops as well. The boxes of goods must be transported over to a warehouse very near the Lisle High School. It is a short distance, but many vans may be needed. Please let me know if you can help deliver these boxes to the warehouse on Friday, November 13 between 2:45 and 4:00. We will have junior high help to load the vans at St. Joan. Operation Support Our Troops volunteers will help unload at the other end.

Please keep recording minutes read each day on the November Book It log. The program runs through March. Turn in the Monarch Book logs when you are ready as well. Thank you for all the supervision you provided your child to help get these reading programs done properly.

Report Cards come home to you this Wednesday (11/4). Please sign and return the slip enclosed with the report. Also, I am eager to set up conferences with you to discuss your child’s progress. Please email me at (mdonovan@sjalise.org) to set up a time to meet if November 23-24 are not good for you.

Reading: The Fireballs will read Big Blue Whale. The Bees will read Pecos Bill. The Bowling balls will read Spiders At Work. All three groups will have their regular comprehension quiz and spelling test on Friday.

Math: The Cubs will finish up Chapter 6 and have their test early next week. The new material this week for them will be ordered pairs. The Blackhawks will spend this week and next week on Chapter 6. We will learn about range, median, mode, and mean along with line plots. Please visit the Houghton Mifflin website (eduplace.com/map) for extra practice of any skill your child needs to work on.

Religion: We will study Chapter 6 and take the test this Thursday.

Social Studies: The 3A homeroom students begin Social Studies on Monday in Room 3B. I look forward to working with them as we study maps, geography and our 50 states. Please ask them to bring home their spiral notebooks once a week to review the sentences (notes) they write. These sentences are the study guide for any quizzes or tests. We will skip around in the text to cover vocabulary terms for maps and geography.

English: We begin Unit 3 and the study of verbs. We will continue writing poems and narrative stories themed upon Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Spanish: Please check that your child has completed the booklet. There are extra credit pages available to help support their grade. This booklet will be collected on Thursday and graded. They have a small oral report to present by giving a weather report due this Thursday. This, too, will be graded. No grade appears on this first quarter report card. Grades are on the semester report cards and given second and fourth quarters.

Have a great week and please contact me if you wish to set up a conference.
