3A Week of November 2 Ms.Brown

Spanish: Weather forecast presentations are due this Friday, November 6. All of the children will give their weather forecasts on this day. Spanish books will also be collected on Friday and should be complete. The extra credit pages are optional however the children were encouraged to complete them as they will be credited toward their grade. Spanish grades are given at the end of each semester in third grade not quarterly.

Religion: This week we will work in Chapter 7; The Good News. We have already begun our discussion of what it means to share good news and why we do so. We will learn about the good news that Jesus shares and read some parables. We will take the Chapter 7 test on Thursday, November 5.

English/Writing: This week we will continue to work in Unit 3. This week present and past tense verbs. We will continue to share our Batty Facts stories and begin a short narrative summary of Outrageous October.

Science: 3B students will begin Science this week for the second quarter. We will study life science. We begin our study with learning about living things (organisms), what living things have in common and what they need. We will also begin to learn about the structures of living things. This week we take a look at the parts of a seed and the parts of an egg and compare and contrast them. From there we will look at the basic building blocks of all living things; cells. The children will also learn about how to be a scientist. They will recieve their first lesson outline and vocabulary packet during the week of November 9. This is something that will accompany each lesson in the two chapters that we will cover this quarter.

Reading: This week the Publishers will read JJ’s Big Day and be ready to take a unit test on Friday, November 6. The Authors will read In My Family and the Illustrators will read Spiders at Work. All groups will work in practice books, take spelling tests, story quizzes, and work on related writing assignments and the leveled reader.

Math: This week we begin Chapter 6 in which we will learn about collecting and organizing data. We will learn some new math vocabulary in this chapter such as mean, median, mode, and range and learn to apply these concepts. We will also learn how to read a line plot and a pictograph. This week’s problem solving skill will be making a table. The week’s lessons will be lesson 6.1-6.5. Everyone did a great job with Chapter 5 and learning to regroup with subtraction. We will continue to practice this skill throughout the year as well as addition with regrouping. Keep practicing basic addition and subtraction facts at home; we need to know them well!

Accelerated Reader: The children did a fine job of meeting their goals for the first quarter. For the second quarter and the remainder of the year the AR requirement increases by only one book per letter grade so an A=8 passed quizzes and above, B=5,6,7 passed quizzes, and a C= 4 passed quizzes.

October Book It Reading logs should be returned to school on Monday if your child chose to participate this month. Our daily goal for November remains the same; 20 minutes of reading per day.

Look for report cards in this week’s Wednesday envelope. Conference scheduling sheets went home in last week’s Wednesday envelope so if you feel the need to conference please return the sheet to school. If you are unable to schedule a conference during that week and would like to come in please email me (lbrown@sjalisle.org) and we can set up a conference that will work out for you. I am available every morning at 7A.M.for conferences.

Last week we learned about the Catholic Social Teaching of Respect and Dignity for human life. Our book suggested ways that we could help others and luckily two service projects have come along that go hand in hand with what we learned about. One is a collection for gently plastic used toys and coats that the Brownies and Daisies are coordinating. There is a collection box outside the Tech Center for this. During the week of November 9 the entire school will be collecting items to send overseas in support of our troops. This collection will be coordinated by Operation Support our Troops Illinois.  Third graders will be collecting granola bars (individually wrapped), toilet paper, and travel sizes of personal care products(non-aerosol). This collection box will be in our classroom. Since we talked about this in class last week some children have already brought in donations so THANK YOU!  Please donate as little or as much as your family situation allows. All donations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support!

Also, as the first quarter has ended our supply of paper towels and kleenex has dwindled. If you are able to help us out that would be great.

And so we begin another busy, exciting quarter in third grade! Have a great weekend!
