Mrs. Barenbrugge 1A-September 28
Published by Mrs. Barenbrugge 1A September 28th, 2009 in Announcements.Hello! I find it hard to believe we are in the last week of September already! First grade is really into the routines of switching classes now. The children know where they have to go and what to bring with them! I am proud of them
In math both groups will be working on addition. The key vocabulary for this chapter includes: add, part, whole, plus sign, equal sign, sum, addition sentence, order and addend. The hardest two words for most students are addend and sum. Please review these words with your child. We will begin time tests this week. For this quarter the goal is for children to learn their addition facts for sums 0-5. You will start to see timed tests coming home to help you gauge how your child is doing on learning the facts.
In religion we will be completing the first unit of study. Your child will be bringing home a study guide packet and the test will be on Thursday. Remember that a review of the vocabulary words from the chapter is probably all your child needs to do in order to “study.”
In social studies we will be celebrating American Folk Hero, Johnny Apple seed’s birthday. We will also spend time learning about important community helpers this week. I can’t believe how much the children have taken off on making maps! I’ve had many maps given to me that were made at home! Hooray! We will make a map of our classroom this week!
In writing we have been focusing on brainstorming for “bright ideas.” We will discuss this some more this week and use our newly developed brainstorming strategies to work on writing a piece called “Good-bye Summer, Hello Fall.”
Book It calendars will come home in the Wednesday envelope. Be on the lookout for it if you wish to participate in the Pizza Hut Reading Incentive Program. Don’t forget about the Monarch Reading Incentive. We have an extra prize for all first graders who read at least five of the Monarch books by February.
In reading the dolphins and cheetahs will be working on the story A Path on the Map. The spelling words are: dish, path, shack, that, thin, and wish. The sentence for the week is: I wish that I had a dish. The high frequency words for this week are: be, could, down, see, but, that, his, and is.
The penguins will be covering two stories this week, A Path on the Map and One Good Pup. They will have 10 words this week in order to cover both stories. The words for this week are: dish, path, shack, that, thin, wish, buck, duck, rug, and but. The high frequency words we will focus on this week include: no, out, ride, small, am, then, had, and at.
Have a great week!
