3B Happenings 8/31 - 9/4

WELCOME BACK!
Last week went very well! Meeting and getting to know your child has been a real joy to me. It is so heartwarming to see their happy and eager faces each morning. Please compliment them for making these first few days both exciting and enjoyable.

Thank you for returning the material due back to the office from the orientation day folder. For your information I have listed below our class ’specials’. I look forward to meeting you again on Curriculum Night (September 17) at 6:30pm. Don’t forget ‘Picture Day’ is September 10. The children love that this is an out of uniform day. They also seem to enjoy wearing gym clothes all day each Monday. What a great time and energy saver it is to not have to change in and out of uniforms! Be sure your child’s name is on everything.

Because the water bottles are a bit sweaty and messy, please send a small wash cloth for wiping up your child’s desk. Also, ask your child about how we celebrate birthdays, how we use the Planner/Homework Notebook, how we use the behavior stoplight, how we do morning work every day before 8:00a, how we use red reward tickets, and how we communicate with you via the Parent Journal and Friday Folder. More details about all of these little procedures will be given on Curriculum Night. The children really look forward to Hot Lunches starting on September17.

Thank you, also, for looking over and signing the Homework Notebook every night. The Wednesday Envelope requires emptying and signing before it is returned. Return only those papers or graded tests that are stamped for return. The rest of the items are for your information only and need not be returned. The Friday Folder works in the same fashion.

This week we will begin our regular third grade routine for all subjects.

Reading: Groups will begin reading their first story. We will choose group names  on Monday. Ask your child which story they are to read aloud at home before Thursday. There will be a Spelling test on Friday. Words are sent home on Monday each week.

Math: Groups will begin with Chapter 1 and cover place value, reading aloud and writing large numbers, and odd/even numbers. we will move through this very quickly and have a quiz next week.

Religion: We are working on Chapter 1 and will complete a practice test this Thursday. The children have completed some beautiful and artistic work showing God’s creation. They love our prayerful songs.

Social Studies: We will begin with Geography and map study. Material from text pages 14, 34, 52, 166, 246, and 332 will be covered. We begin with the 7 continents. They will also look at maps throughout the text and the supplementary material at the back of the book (Geography terms R14-15, and Atlas R16-27). They will be writing sentences/notes in their spiral. These sentences are the study guide.

English: The children have finished ’sloppy’ copy rough drafts and lovely final copies of stories about their first day. We will now begin stories about what they did over the summer. They also completed text Lesson 1.
Spanish: Homework is due each Thursday. Page 4 is due this Thurs. (9/3).
