First Grade - September News

September 2, 2008

We are thrilled to be teaching your children!  So far it has been exciting becoming acquainted with all the new faces.  The children are adjusting well to being in school all day.  We have been learning the class rules as well as new routines.  First grade promises to be an eventful year for all of us!  We are looking forward to a wonderful year together.

Part of our daily routine is to record the behavior for the day on our daily calendars.  The children color their calendar to show how their behavior was for the day.  If the color is green, all is good and no warnings were needed.  If the color is yellow, your child was given 1 or 2 warnings, if the color is red, your child had to be reprimanded on several occasions throughout the day or did a serious offense against the class/school rules. Please initial this calendar each night indicating that you have noted your child’s behavior for the day.

You should have received a Friday Folder.  We send home in this folder, completed work that should remain at home and incomplete work that should be finished and returned to school.

We will be putting the complete set of spelling words and vocabulary words from the Reading Text by McMillan/McGraw Publishers on the Blog later this week.  We recommend that you print a copy to have on hand throughout the year.  Depending on your child’s reading level, the words for the week will be adjusted.  You will be notified each Monday of the words that your child should study for that week.

This week there are NO SPELLING WORDS and NO VOCABULARY WORDS.  This is because on Tuesday and Wednesday your child will be given tests to determine whether they will be eligible for the Project Eagle Program.  All children will be tested for this program.

The first spelling pretest will be given on Wednesday, September 10, the first final test will be given on Friday, September 12.  Please reiterate to your child that usually the spelling words will be all lower case letters.  We will not mark words with letters reversed as incorrect until the first week in October.

The first vocabulary test will be given on Thursday, September 11.  You will be notified as to the results of this test.  If your child did not get 100%, you will be advised as to which words your child was unable to read.  Then, please continue to practice reading these words at home.

You are also receiving a September Calendar offering suggestions for additional activities that your child may want to do.  Do not send this work to school. These are purely optional activities for children who want to do more than the required homework given by the teachers.

The school year is off to a great start, and we are confident that your child will have a great first grade experience.
