PE Department Week of 10/1/07

Happy Fall to Everyone!
We are winding down with the Presidential Physical Fitness Test. Your children were very well prepared to run the mile. We focused on building up their endurance from the beginning of the school year. We have told all the kids that making the qualifying time is not important to us, only that they finish and try their hardest. That is what we are looking for. Not everyone can pass all five events of the test. Those that do are in the top 20th percentile nationally. Quite an accomplishment. We have had students that are terrific athletes, but for one reason or another, cannot pass one or two of the events. We are very proud of all our students. They have all done very well.
4th and 5th graders have gym twice a week and we should finish the Presidential Physical Fitness Test this week, then begin our Badminton Unit. 2nd and 3rd grades are still working on the Presidential Physical Fitness Test, due to the fact that they only have gym once a week. They are anxious to get to the “fun stuff”, as they say.
1st grade and Kindergarten are working on stretching exercises and learning new and fun games. Kindergarten practiced a fire drill with Mrs. B last Friday, and they were extremely well behaved.
Remember, October is Fire Prevention Month. Please talk to your children about remaining quiet at all times during a fire drill.
Last but not least, we have heard from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade homeroom teachers. They are so pleased that the children can dress for gym in the morning before school. It has made their lives so much simpler, and they are able to get to gym class on time with less stress. Great idea, Mr. Wind!
