Hello families!

This week in Science, we are working on the three forms of matter, solid, liquid, and gas. The children seem to be having a great time learning such “big kid” concepts. I am hoping the children have come home telling their families about molecules. We have been learning that in a solid, the molecules are squeezing really close together, while in a liquid they’re a little farther apart. The children will be learning into more detail about gases next week. We have been compiling a mini-book giving examples of solids, liquids, and gases which the children will be bringing home next week also.

Today in Science, we created “oobleck.” This is a substance that is both a solid and liquid without a change in temperature. The students can easily make this creation at home to share with their families, and as I promised them I will share the recipe here.

1 1/2 cups of corn starch, 1 Cup Water, food coloring (optional)

The students absolutely loved this slimy surprise, which when held in your hand acts as a solid, but as soon as you let go, acts as a liquid. Have fun!

A big thank you to all our kindergarten parents that have volunteered their time to be Hands on Science parents. The children are looking forward to this exciting hands-on experience.

Below is a message from a principal in the Wheaton/Warrenville area. We post it here because we feel it has significance.
“We received information from the Warrenville Police Departments that they are investigating a reported child abduction attempt. The suspect offered a 12 year old girl money to enter his car and when she refused, he chased her on foot for some distance. The Winfield Police indicate receiving a report of a person fitting the Warrenville description in their area.

The suspect was described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a thin build, a goatee, wearing a white t-shirt and black sunglasses. He was driving a car of unknown make, blue or green in color, in rusty condition with mismatched wheels.

The Winfield report suggests that this individual is not limiting his actions to one area and we would like all parents to be alerted.

As you know, our schools are locked and we are being vigilant before and after school and during lunch and recess times.

The most important thing we can do as educators and parents is to instill confidence, not fear in our children regarding a situation like this.

Please have a discussion with your children tonight about the following safety tips if they are approached by a stranger:

Tell them to trust their instincts - if they feel they are being followed or something is not right, seek help immediately.

They need to know their name, address, and phone number, and use the buddy system - avoid walking anywhere alone.

In addition, I would ask you to be more cautious and observant as you go about your activities in your neighborhoods.”

Kindergarten played “car drivers” last Friday and 1st grade played “vegetable soup”. Ask them about it! 2nd and 3rd grade continue to work on the Presidential Physical Fitness Test. 2nd grade will run a 1/4 mile and 3rd grade a 1/2 mile in about two weeks.
