Mrs. Barenbrugge 1A

Hello Everyone!  We have been so very busy in 1A!  I think I can say that we are finally adjusted into the routine of our day!  The children know what to expect and exactly what to do now.  They are getting so good at switching classes and moving to and from the PAR!  I am so proud of them!
Here is what we’ve been busy learning about:
In religion we are finishing up our study of the Holy Trinity.  Previous to this chapter we discussed how each of us can take care of God’s creation.  Are your first graders still taking care of the grass we planted?  We have been working on the sign of the cross.  Please be sure to reinforce the correct way at home.  Did you see your child’s Sign of the Cross book?  We are beginning to practice songs and speeches for All Saints Day.  For the next few weeks this will be our major focus during religion.
In social studies we finished our study of “People Everywhere.”  We have been doing some work with maps.  The students learned what a bird’s eye view is and why it is important to making maps.  We also discussed why a map key is important to understanding a map.  We also spent some time reading and talking about Christopher Columbus.
We have finished our study of sentences in grammar and we are learning about nouns.  We have been sorting nouns into people, places and things.  We have also been looking for nouns in the sentences.  This work on nouns will continue and then we will move into verbs and adjectives.
This week was fire prevention week.  We have read some fire safety books and completed some fun activities.  Please ask your child about what he/she learned about fire safety.
In reading all three of my reading groups took the unit one test.  You should see that coming home soon.  We will NOT have spelling next week due to the short school week.  The Monarch Book Club forms have been sent home.  If you choose to participate in this program remember to initial the form and send it back.  I am looking to set up some reading helpers on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings.  Please let me know if you are interested.
In math we have finished Chapter 2-addition concepts.  We are working on Chapter 3 and 4 simultaneously.  Chapter three covers subtraction concepts and chapter four is all about graphing.  You may have heard that we have a teacher visitor.  For the next month we will have a NCC college student visiting and learning with us during math class.  Her name is Asia Riviera and we are excited to have her!
I am planning a project and I am looking for a few items to be donated.  We need 32 child size black socks, 2 bags of stuffing, and approximately 7 pieces of black fun foam.  If you are interested in helping with these donations please let me know.  Thank you!
I hope you all have a safe, enjoyable long weekend!  And as always, please feel free to talk to me about any questions and/or concerns you have!
