Dear Parents of SJA Children in grades 4-8 for the 2008-09 school year:
Would you like to help your child do better in school?   Educational research supports the need for children to read at home on a regular basis.  “The more reading children do at home, the more likely to are to do well in school.  The amount of leisure time spent reading is DIRECTLY related to children’s comprehension, the size of their vocabularies, and gains in their reading ability…..”
[The Educated Child: A Parent’s Guide  by William J. Bennet].
The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award  was developed to encourage children in grades 4-8 to read for personal satisfaction.  It is an Illinois award presented to an author for outstanding literature for young people and is sponsored by the Illinois Reading Council, the Illinois School Library Media Association, and the Illinois Association of Teachers of English.
Illinois students participating in the Caudill program each year read a minimum of 3 books on the list and vote for their favorite in February.  Schools submit their tallied votes to the award committee and the overall  winner for the state is announced in March of each year.  A plaque is given to the author of the winning book.

•    The local community libraries, as well as our SJA library and the local bookstores, have a designated shelf where the “Caudill”   books are kept throughout the year..  The local public schools also participate in this program each year.
What does this program involve for your child?
•    Between now and February 2009, s/he reads a minimum of 3 books on the list. Participating students are asked to take a quick quiz (5  questions)  for each Caudill book read.  These quizzes are not nearly as detailed as the accelerated reader tests and are solely intended to verify that a book was read.
•    The quizzes are available in the SJA library.
•    The grade level coordinators will keep track of participation for their respective grades
•    There are NO regular MEETINGS and NO COMPETITIONS.
•    On February 24th (Fat Tuesday),  a special pizza lunch/meeting will be held with Sr. Carolyn for all participants who’ve read 3 of the books.  After voting for their favorite Caudill book, students will be eligible to win raffle prizes at the lunch.  We will announce the favorite book of each grade level, as well as the overall SJA favorite.
•    In March, we’ll post in the SJA Library which book was the overall winner for the state of Illinois.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, or any of the coordinators below.  We’re hoping for a record number of SJA participants for the 2008-09 school year!!!
