MRS. BARENBRUGGE 1A
Published by Mrs. Barenbrugge 1A September 12th, 2008 in Announcements.Wow! We have been so busy in 1A! We are really off to a great start. The children are learning the routines and how things work in first grade. The store was a HUGE success by all that I could see. Thank you to the moms that volunteered to get things up and running!
Here is what we’ve been doing:
RELIGION- We have been talking about how God is our creator and how he gave us the world because he loves and cares for us. We attended Mass this morning and the children did a great job!
READING-We worked with the story Quack this week. With this week’s story we focused on the –ack word family. We made a list of –ack words and we looked for them in our reading. I know many of you are anxious to hear about reading groups, unfortunately, there is still some more individual testing that will be finished up early next week. We will begin reading groups the following week.
GRAMMAR-We have started out the year focusing on sentences. We are learning about what a sentence is. So far, we have discussed that a sentence is a group of words that tell a complete thought. The words have to been in the correct order and they have to make sense. We have also talked about how all sentences start with a capital letter. We will continue our sentence work next week.
MATH-In math we have been reviewing the numbers 0 to 20. We have been using the terms greater than and less than to compare numbers. Today, we used the strategy of drawing a picture to solve a word problem. We also did our math assessments and will begin switching into our math groups next week.
SOCIAL STUDIES- Our first unit is entitled “People Everywhere.” We started out discussing our families at home and then discussed our school family. We talked about the things we do together and how it is helpful for us to work together. We also read a book about the Pledge of Allegiance that explained what the words meant.
Thank you for all of your work at home. I know there may have been little confusion about homework this week. Each Monday your child will bring home a paper that lists the spelling and vocabulary words for the story his/her group is reading. It will also include the story name and possibly any other assignments for the week. The reading book will come home on Tuesday so you can read the story with your child. The reading book needs to come back to school the next day. The paper is for your information only. It is just a list of what you should work on at home. I hope that clears things up. Please let me know if you still have questions about homework. One last thing about homework, please make sure your child puts his/her name on the packet. I received a lot of packets this week that had no name on them. Thank you!
There are many plans under way for All Saint’s Day. One of the things we are going to work on next week is the squares for the quilt. If you have a chance this weekend please show your child a picture of your saint and talk a little about him or her. This background knowledge will help them decorate their square next week.
As always, please let me know if you have questions or concerns and thank you for all your help at home!
