MMC The new school year

Welcome back! I haven’t met with all my students yet, but we are getting off to a terrific start. The 7th grade Video Production classes are producing political campaign commercials, focusing on issues and the importance of voting. Eighth graders are working on our news show broadcasts, and we have the first one scheduled for Friday, September 12. This is a bit earlier than we have ever gone “on the air,” but I am confident the students are up to the challenge.

Both fifth and sixth graders are engaging in the study of today’s media culture, in our Media Literacy classes. This is the first year I have offered the course to fifth graders, and it should be an exciting excursion for them. This week, fifth graders discussed the difference between people’s needs and wants, and how advertisers try to convert our wants into needs. They formed teams and were asked to list either the top five things we need in life, the top five things we want in life, or the five most important things in life.

Their answers were charming and very insightful. Things listed as top needs included basic necessities like food, water and shelter. They also named a good education and prayer. Their top wants included only one material thing, even though it was “all the digital tech in the world.” Other things listed were to never have a surprise test and to meet Jesus.

Finally, the students who were asked to name the five most important things in life really hit the mark. Their list included making it into heaven, having a loving family, being a good person, practicing our religion and having freedom. We should be proud of them all!
