2008 Battle of the Books
Published by Mrs. Jablonski (Library) May 12th, 2008 in Announcements.WHO: All students entering SJA’s Junior High this fall are invited to participate in the Wheaton Library Battle
of Books. SJA had two very successful teams last year placing 2nd and 3rd among eleven teams from local
junior high schools.
WHAT: The Wheaton Library selects 20 battle books. The kids have the summer and early fall to prepare for
competitions in October-November. There are only 6 competitions over 8 weeks. The number of competitions
the kids will participate in depends on the number of books read over the summer. Schedule conflicts for
competitions are easily accommodated because of the popularity of the competitions.
HOW: Ten books minimum of the 20 selected titles are required to participate in the competitions.
WHEN: Teams will meet over the summer to discuss a book once a week. Attendance of the weekly summer
review sessions is not mandatory however an appearance of at least one summer review is appreciated. You
will be notified of review sessions before the end of the school year. We end the summer with a pizza and/or
pool party. Meetings in the fall are held immediately after school so that there are no sporting conflicts.
WHERE: Battles are held at the Wheaton Public Library.
WHY: The variety of books are usually well liked by the kids. Many have said they were surprised how much
they enjoyed a book even though they were turned off by the title or cover. Everyone should read books over
the summer. And it’s fun to read the same books as your friends and get together over a snack to talk about
them. And if you’ve got a competitive spirit, then why not represent your school in some serious battles?
No cost for this program, however we do assign drinks and snacks. Books are available at SJA during the
summer and at local libraries.
Attached you will have the list of books for the year. Please return the registration below on or before MAY 28,
OR e-mail Sue Jennings at diverrtj@comcast.net. Any questions please e-mail me or call 305-3251.
Note: The Jr High program is designed differently from the 4th -5th grade program.
