MASKED MAGIC
2008-2009 Dinner Dance Auction
We are excited to announce that the 2008-2009 Dinner Dance Auction, MASKED MAGIC will be held on a new date, Saturday November 1, 2008. We are hoping that the date change will allow our SJA community to fully support this fundraiser. The November date makes for prime Christmas shopping, and allows volunteers to be more flexible with their time, rather than working over the Christmas break. See blog below for more info…………….

The SJA School Board has recently approved the 2008-09 operating budget. The school administration continues to strive to keep expenses down while providing a top quality Catholic education for our children. However, in order to maintain this tradition of excellence, we have determined that the 2008-09 tuition increase will be 6%. Due to strong stewardship and administrative leadership, we remain one of the most affordable Catholic Schools in the area. Some of the benefits included in next years budget that will directly impact our children are
· New science books for grades 1-5
· New social studies books for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 8th grades
· A new wireless computer lab (laptops) for the elementary building
From a revenue perspective, several factors have an impact on our projections. As mentioned last year, the St. Joan of Arc Endowment Fund has reached $1,000,000. For 2008-09, the SJA Scrip program, which used to fund the endowment, as well as the interest on the endowment, will go into our operating income. Thus, your support of the SJA Scrip program will directly affect tuition increases for future years. In addition, we have moderated our projections for SJA fund raisers given 2007-08 results and a weakened economy. Finally, the 8th grade graduating class is larger than the average class size coming up from the elementary grades (a trend consistent with nearby school districts), thus reducing overall enrollment and revenue.
On a positive revenue note, thanks to the political advocacy efforts, the state is now subsidizing new text books every other year instead of every third and a state block grant will help fund state health mandates. Additionally, SJA Parish continues to generously pass along 100% of the money donated by SJA school families in their Sunday envelopes to the school.
Looking forward at expenses in the 2008/2009 school year, St. Joan of Arc is facing similar inflationary pressures to the rest of the market, including:
· Increases in utility, health insurance, and fire and liability insurance costs
· In addition, a mandated increase from 7% to 8.5% of payroll for retirement funding
With the 6% increase, the total cost to educate one child at St. Joan of Arc School in 2008-09 will be $4,784. For families who are active and contributing members of St. Joan of Arc Church, the full cost of tuition for one child will be reduced by $1,848 for a final tuition of $2,936. Out of Parish families are required to pay the full cost of tuition, reduced by any subsidy vouchers received from their parish. Further discounting is provided for additional children, regardless of parish affiliation.
We want to thank you for your commitment to St. Joan of Arc School; for your contributions, both monetary and in the time and effort that so many of you have given. Recently, 16 SJA parents and school administrators attended a Catholic school summit where the facilitator stated, “We find a way to pay for what we believe in!” St. Joan of Arc is blessed to have such dedicated and generous parents who help ensure our children receive a Catholic school education.
