General News: I hope that everyone enjoyed a restful and fun Spring Break. Our first week back to school will focus on the coming of Easter. We will talk about Jesus’s sacrafice for us and watch the eighth grade present the Stations of the Cross on Tuesday. We will make some Easter Baskets in hope of the Easter Bunny leaving us some goodies. On Wednesday, April 11, the first grade class will visit the SciTech Museum in Aurora for some fun, hands-on activities. On May 8, we will celebrate Mother’s Day with a program for our mothers at 9:30. On May 11, we will go on a field trip to Concordia College to see a play about Henry and Mudge.

Religion: We will celebrate the New Life that Christians share because of the death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus. We will discuss how Jesus is our Savior. We will talk about the Sacraments of the Church , especially Baptism. We will talk about the parts of the Mass. Your child should be able to make the Sign of the Cross and say The Hail Mary and The Our Father Prayers.
Reading:

Phonics and Spelling- We are studying long vowel sounds, Long o using oa, oe, ow; Long i using y, igh, u, spelled oo; ar, er, ir, ur.

Grammar- We are studying adjectives and subjects

Vocabulary - We will read words with -ing ending and other suffixes and compound words

Comprehension - Wewill distinquish between Fantasy and Reality and be able to summarize a short story
Study Skills - We will begin to use a dictionary and other reference sources

Writing - We will continue to write descriptive and expository forms of writing.

Math:

We are learning to tell time on the hour and half hour. We will be able to read a calendar and a simple schedule. Later, we will begin to use various forms of measurement that include, length (inches and centimeters) weight (pounds and kilograms) capacity (cups, quarts, liters). We will begin to add and subtract numbers to 18 and then two digit addition to 100.

Science - We will go on a field trip on April 11 to the SciTech Museum. We will complete our unit on Earth’s Land and Water with lessons about recycling. We will try to form crystals in the classroom. Our final unit will be on Keeping Fit and Healthy where we will explore the importance of a healthy diet, exercise, safety and good grooming.
